The ATD Certification Institute (ATD CI) is an independent organization created by ATD to take the lead and set industry standards for the talent development profession. ATD CI offers two credentials based upon the ATD Talent Development Capability Model: the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) and the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD).


The Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) is a certification for talent development professionals who are in the early part of their careers or whose professional roles and aspirations are focused on a few areas of expertise. The capabilities included in the APTD are the basics of talent development that professionals can use every day, no matter the level within an organization or company. What is the CPTD certification?

The Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) is a professional certification for TD professionals with at least five years of experience. It is broad and measures a professional’s knowledge and skill application across the breadth of talent development capabilities.

Who can apply for the CPTD?

All CPTD candidates must have at least five years of related work experience and should have deep knowledge and experience applying the principles for enhancing employee talent development. A CPTD understands and can affect the value and impact talent development strategies and solutions bring to the success of an organization.

What Topics are Covered?

The CPTD covers a subset of the knowledge and skills from the Talent Development Capability Model, focusing on skills application and decision-making for more experienced professionals.

How much studying/preparation is required?

Study times vary by individual. Most candidates spend a minimum of 80+ hours to prepare for the knowledge exam and another 30+ hours to prepare for the skills application exam.
